Beyond Good and Evil 2 Development at ‘Day Zero’

Ubisoft revealed a new Beyond Good and Evil 2 trailer during its E3 2017 press conference last week to huge applause. Fans have been waiting for the game for years and were ecstatic that progress on the title is being made.

Unfortunately, though, fans may have still had to wait much longer to actually get their hands on the game. In a new interview series creator Michel Ancel described Beyond Good and Evil 2‘s development as being at “day zero.” This may be troubling for those worried that the title may not see the light of day. However, the creator also explains why development has taken so long, saying that it took Ubisoft Montpellier three years just to create the technology needed to start making the game.

Ancel notes that “When you don’t have this technology, you can’t really start the game,” as it’s just “too difficult.” The creator also reassures would-be Beyond Good and Evil 2 players that the team “can say for sure that we will make this game, we’ll finish it. Because we have the technology for it.”

Those looking forward to playing Beyond Good and Evil 2 for themselves will certainly be disappointed by Ancel’s comments. The game is one incredibly ambitious title, as it promises destructible environments, high-speed chases, combat on vehicles and multiplayer features too. While fans won’t want Ancel and co. to rush the game and release something broken and buggy, if development is only at day zero then they could be forced to wait many more years to actually play it.

On the other hand, the slow development of the game comes as very little surprise. And that’s not just because of the game’s past and the lengthy period of radio silence from Ubisoft and Ancel about the game, either. Alongside the reveal of the game, Ancel also invited players to join the Space Monkey Program and have input on various aspects of the game. That is a nice gesture that can get fans involved but it may also suggest that key gameplay areas and aspects have not been nailed down just yet.

Additionally, the game’s release platforms have yet to be officially confirmed. While the Space Monkey Program seems to suggest a multi-platform release, there are also rumors that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive for a period of time. Ubisoft Montpellier has a lot of work to do but it’s unclear where ‘confirming release platforms’ is on the developer’s to-do list.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 does not have a release date.
