Death Stranding Trailer Reveals Supernatural Enemies, Story Details

Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4.

As it turns out, Hideo Kojima wasn’t just at The Game Awards to present an award. The veteran game developer was also there to unveil a brand new Death Stranding trailer, alongside his friend and colleague Norman Reedus. And while the eight-minute long feature has left many fans feeling confused, it also offers up plenty of details on what players can expect.

The trailer seems to confirm that Death Stranding players will face off against some supernatural foes. The footage opens with Reedus’ character and his two colleagues at the site of some sort of accident. But as one of Reedus’ colleagues is rescuing another, a gadget attached to his suit starts blinking fast and he quickly reminds everyone to hold their breath.

What happens next is incredibly unsettling as some sort of shadowy foe, that leaves black footprints, begins to walk over the site and around the three colleagues. Although they think the danger has passed, the colleagues are mistaken, the footsteps return and several shadow creatures surround them and begin to drag bodies into giant pits of tar. Eventually, Reedus’ character is the only one left standing. It’s wonderfully macabre and is every bit as oddball as Hideo Kojima fans might expect.

The trailer also hints at two larger foes. These include a giant enemy that grabs things with its maw and explodes them in its head like lightning and a huge swimming creature with tentacles. Hideo Kojima loves teasing players and leaving secrets in his trailers, so the implications of these enemies and their abilities could be another thing for fans to figure out.

The new Death Stranding trailer isn’t all supernatural spooks and specters, though, but also mentions two “explosions.” One explosion created life (which is presumably a reference to the big bang theory) and another explosion “will be our last,” according to an ominous voiceover from Reedus. Reedus has previously teased that Death Stranding will feature black holes, so fans know that the game is based on some real science. Presumably the idea about explosions all ties in with that.

Another thing that fans noticed about this Death Stranding trailer is that the end credits scene makes no mention of (Hideo Kojima’s other friend and former collaborator) Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro’s role in the game is said to be ‘limited’ but the fact that he isn’t listed in the credits highlights how brief his appearance in Death Stranding may be. It also means that fans will have to work harder to figure out how he fits into the game, as though this trailer didn’t give them enough to chew over already.
