Fallout and The Elder Scrolls Are Separate Universes, Says Pete Hines

A popular Bethesda game fan theory has been put to rest. The developer’s marketing executive, Pete Hines, revealed that the Fallout series and Elder Scrolls franchise do not exist in the same universe, despite many gamers making that claim.

The revelation was made during an interview between Hines and GameSpot, where the Bethesda executive discussed his confusion over the fan theory. As Hines puts it, Fallout 1 and 2 were created by another developer, Interplay, before the franchise was acquired by Bethesda.

Once Bethesda acquired the Fallout rights from Interplay, it didn’t adjust the story of Fallout 3 or 4 in order to bring them in harmony with the Elder Scrolls world. Essentially, the fan theory holds no water in the minds of Bethesda’s team. Hines said:

“I haven’t the foggiest of notions how anybody could make the leap that they are in fact part of the same thing. We made Elder Scrolls, and a completely different developer and publisher came up with Fallout, which we then acquired.

“I don’t think there’s any universe in which those universes are in the same universe. That’s not a thing.”

Sadly, it seems Bethesda is on a streak this week breaking the hearts of many gamers. In addition to denying gamers this fan theory, Bethesda also stirred up mixed emotions among gamers by announcing Creation Club. While Bethesda denies that the new Creation Club mod system is a new form of “paid mods,” many gamers still see it that way.

There’s also the revelation that Bethesda has not yet started on development for Elder Scrolls 6. Many gamers were hoping to see the game announced this week during E3, but this latest bit of info means gamers shouldn’t expect to see anything Elder Scrolls 6 related for a couple more years.

Fortunately, not everything is doom-and-gloom for Bethesda fans. Wolfenstein 2 was revealed and looks very impressive. If it’s anything like its predecessor, then gamers have a lot to look forward to with Wolfenstein 2.

With the Fallout/Elder Scrolls fan theory now dead, it will be interesting to see what other Bethesda game fan theories gamers come up with and if any of them turn out to be true.
