Microsoft’s Xbox One X promises to be the most powerful console ever when it launches later this year, but power doesn’t mean much without games that take full advantage of it. As it turns out, it seems like not all upcoming third-party releases will be optimized with the Xbox One X in mind, as some development studios haven’t even received dev kits for the console yet, the Far Cry 5 team included.
This is according to Jason Stettner of Gamer Headquarters, who claims to have spoken with a Far Cry 5 developer at E3 2017. Apparently, Far Cry 5 is being “heavily optimized” for PS4 and PS4 Pro, partly because the team hasn’t received Xbox One X dev kits. Even so, Far Cry 5 is being advertised for Xbox One X, so one has to imagine that the team will get their hands on a dev kit sooner rather than later.
If it’s true that the Far Cry 5 development team hasn’t received Xbox One X dev kits, that seems like an odd decision on the part of Microsoft. After all, the main selling point of the Xbox One X is its ability to play games at native 4K resolution, and it is being pushed as the machine that will give players the best possible experience on consoles. However, if developers aren’t given enough time to work with it, then they may not have time to take full advantage of the hardware.
Even if Far Cry 5 doesn’t take full advantage of the Xbox One X’s added horsepower, the game should still be impressive on the console, and any console it’s played on, for that matter. Far Cry 5‘s E3 2017 gameplay trailer was met positively by the gaming community, showcasing the typical open world gameplay elements that fans have come to expect from the series.
Of course, Far Cry 5‘s rural Montana setting should give players, even more, a reason to be excited about the game. For the most part, the series has stuck to exotic locations, so an open world based in Montana should feel fresh and unique, and could give the franchise a shot in the arm.
Far Cry 5 is due for release early next year, so fans have to wait awhile before they can see if the team manages to nail its new open world. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if the Far Cry 5 team is able to add Xbox One X enhancements to the game between now and its release date.
Far Cry 5 will launch on February 27th, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
