The Game Awards 2016 was home to numerous game announcements and new trailers for upcoming titles. During the event, Microsoft revealed a new trailer for its Xbox exclusive Halo Wars 2, the real-time strategy game in development at 343 Industries and Creative Assembly.
The new Halo Wars 2 trailer provides viewers a bit of narrative leading up to the events of the game. Nearly three decades after the events of the original Halo Wars, and shortly after Halo 5: Guardians, Captain James Cutter, and his crew stumble upon the Banished, an enemy force that broke away from the Covenant.
In the trailer, an artificial intelligence named Isabel explains the evil-doings of Atriox, the Brute leader of the Banished. Isabel explains how the Covenant used Atriox and his clan as “expendable muscle”, and how Atriox survived numerous wars before eventually rising up to become a legend. Eventually, the Brute turned against the Covenant and started the Banished, an army of mercenaries hell-bent on acquiring the most powerful weapon in the galaxy. The full trailer can be seen below.
The trailer shows Atriox’s brutal fighting abilities and his intimidation and control over his army of Banished. Considering Atriox is the only creature to “defy the Covenant and survive”, he’s undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with, and one that will give players a great challenge throughout Halo Wars 2.
Meanwhile, players will take on the role of Cutter and his USNC army to take on and defeat Atriox and his Banished. Like its predecessor, Halo Wars 2 will provide players a birds-eye-view of the battlefield, and task players with making the most of their army and environment to defeat their enemy.
The Halo Wars 2 campaign will feature 13 missions and support cooperative gameplay. Additionally, the game will offer a number of multiplayer modes where up to six players can take on each other in quick-paced battles. Players can also enjoy single-player Skirmishes, where they take on AI enemies in the multiplayer game modes and maps.
The events of Halo Wars 2 will have a “big impact” on the currently unannounced Halo 6, at least according to 343 Industries narrative director Kevin Grace. Hopefully, that means 343 is planning to incorporate characters and events from Halo 5 into Halo Wars 2 as well.
