2016 saw the release of many great independent games, but perhaps the most notable title among the year’s releases was Playdead Studios’ critically-acclaimed Inside. The puzzle-platformer impressed critics and gamers alike upon release, ultimately winning the Best Independent Game trophy at The Game Awards 2016. Playdead has quite a high bar to meet when it comes to its next title needless to say, but the studio appears to be sticking with a winning formula based on a brand new teaser image.
Over at the official Playdead Twitter account, the studio recently tweeted out a gorgeous new teaser image of its currently-untitled third title. Having been in development since Inside was launched back in 2016, this new project appears to be another puzzle-platformer akin to the Playdead’s previous two games.
The release window for Playdead’s new title is still currently unknown, but given that it took the studio six years worth of development time and delays to bring Inside to market, players should not be expecting this game to be launched anytime soon. It remains to be seen how long it will take for this game to hit shelves, but due to some major behind-the-scenes changes recently, there’s a possibility that the game could be in store for a rocky development process. Playdead co-founder Dino Patti left the studio following the release of Inside, but recent reports reveal that he was forced out of the company with a $7 million settlement, leading to speculation that the team is in some trouble.
While it remains to be seen how losing a studio co-founder will affect the team going forward, it’s hard to deny that the Playdead has a short but fantastic track record under its belt. With Limbo and Inside both garnering critical acclaim, high sales, and a spot on numerous best indie games lists, hopefully, these behind-the-scenes changes won’t affect Playdead’s upcoming new game and fans can expect another special gaming experience soon.
