Microsoft Approves the New Duke Controller for Xbox One

Xbox One is a line of eighth generation home video game consoles developed by Microsoft

Xbox One

When Microsoft introduced the original Xbox to the masses in 2001, it came with a gigantic controller that many felt was too large. Over time, gamers affectionately (and sometimes non-affectionately) called this controller The Duke due to its large stature, and the name stuck. Several months ago, Hyperkin announced that it was bringing The Duke back, and the nostalgic masses reacted in a positive fashion. Now it appears Microsoft also approves of the design, with a tweet from former Xbox co-founder Seamus Blackley sharing his enthusiasm.

When designing The Duke, it’s clear that Hyperkin opted to leave as much of the original design choices in place as it possibly could: the unsightly white and black buttons on the top right remain and will allow gamers to add a fifth and sixth input to the controller. Gamers will be able to use The Duke on their Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and Windows 10 devices with ease provided that they can wrap their mitts around it. No official release date or pricing information has been released yet.

In a follow-up tweet, Blackley also confirmed that the new generation of Duke controllers would feature many improvements over the original. These include new left and right bumpers, Windows 10 compatibility, and an animated screen in the middle that can show much more than just the original Xbox logo. Hyperkin had prototypes of the upcoming controller on display at E3 2017, which may be a strong indicator that the controller will be made available in the next few months.

Hyperkin’s original press release for the controller stated that that the bulky item would feature a very limited release, so those who want to wrap their hands around the old-school design may have to act quickly once it comes to stores. Yesterday’s tweet confirms that the company The Duke 2.0 is closer to becoming a reality, and we’re sure many nostalgic gamers will be excited to pick up The Duke, which is truly the perfect way to play those backward compatible original Xbox titles.
