The first rule of monster hunting is to know the enemy; in Monster Hunter World, this rule can be the difference between a successful hunt and a failure. This can be especially true among apex predators such as Rathalos, but in this guide, the focus will be on another terrifying beast, the Legiana.
Before embarking on the hunt, it is always best to go prepared. Make sure to have plenty of potions and to be completely outfitted (check out the bandit mantle if in serious need of Zenny). The Legiana – a flying wyvern – is a tough fight, as it can just out of reach.
Preparing for Combat
The best weapon to close the distance between the hunter and the Legiana is the Switch Axe, Longsword, Insect Glaive, or the Bow. Short-ranged weapons, such as the Dual Blades, will put hunters at a serious disadvantage. It is also important to remember that the Legiana will run away from other monsters, so relying on another monster to weaken it should be avoided.
Since the Legiana is an ice-based wyvern, so one would think that fire is the best element to have. However, a thunder based weapon is actually the top tier element of choice against Legiana. On top of that, it is the weakest against the poison status ailment, so any type of attack or consumable that inflicts poison will give the team a leg up. Once prepared for combat, the beast will be awaiting the hunter in the Coral Highlands section of Monster Hunter World.
The Legiana is likely to be lurking in areas 12, 13, and 15 (its lair). Tracks often appear around area 8, so the hunt begins quickly. Once in combat, know that its tail cannot actually be cut off, but it is still an area of weakness, especially when the beast is stunned. Taking away its airborne advantage is another good strategy, but it is difficult.
To do so, a strike from a heavy weapon to the head may stun it, so the hunter can focus on the wings. An easier method, though, would be to allow the Palico to draw its fire, circle around the Legiana, and focus on the legs or wings. It is a quick beast, however, so targeting the wings is difficult.
Once Legiana is on the ground, though, try to focus on its head, which is its weakest point. Obviously, that is easier said than done, so the wings and tail are secondary options.
After repeatedly attacking the beast and chasing it through the Coral Highlands, Legiana will typically flee to its nest high atop the area. Head to the cliff’s edge and ride the gust of wind up to deal the final blows or capture the beast for additional rewards.
With proper preparation and combat strategy, the Legiana becomes much less intimidating; another beast that may require a guide is the Odogaron, so check it out.
