Nintendo Switch Production Will Increase By Double to Meet Demand

Even with Nintendo’s plan to ship 2 million Nintendo Switch units in March, the console is still hard to find at retailers, seemingly sold out almost everywhere. Those that want to get their hands on Nintendo’s new console will be happy to learn that it should be much easier to do so in the next few months, as the Big N plans on doubling production of Nintendo Switch units for the next fiscal year.

This increase in production will see Nintendo produce 16 million Nintendo Switch consoles from April 1st, 2017 to March 31st, 2018. This number is significant, as the Wii U sold less than 16 million units over the course of its lifetime, indicating that Nintendo has a lot more confidence in the Nintendo Switch’s ability to resonate with consumers.

So far, it seems as though Nintendo’s increase in Switch production is justified. The console is breaking sales records for Nintendo, posting the biggest numbers for any Nintendo console launch in various regions worldwide. Based on its initial sales success, there definitely seems to be more interest in the Nintendo Switch than there ever was on the Wii U, and if Nintendo is able to keep its momentum going, it should be able to hit or surpass 40 million units sold by 2020 as some analysts have predicted.

Of course, in order for Nintendo to keep its momentum, it will need to keep releasing high-quality software for the Switch’s library of games. The console got off to a strong start thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is one of the highest-rated video games of all time and has the record for a perfect scores of any game released to date. It seems as though many fans purchased a Nintendo Switch exclusively for Zelda, as the game has a nearly 1:1 sales ratio with the console.

To Nintendo’s credit, it seems as though there are a number of potentially great Switch games set to release for the console in the near future that should help keep its sales numbers high. For example, an enhanced version of Mario Kart 8 is releasing next month, which should appeal to gamers interested in a Switch that never purchased a Wii U. Beyond Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the innovative fighting game Arms is slated to release for the console at some point this spring.

Nintendo Switch is available now.
