One of the Nintendo Switch’s greatest strengths is that it has a clear selling point… Or gimmick if you want to call it that. The Wii U lacked a clear vision and led to a lot of consumer confusion about what the point of the console was. Hardcore gamers understood that it was basically just a more powerful Wii, but the average shopper had no idea what the point of it was for years after its launch. The Nintendo Switch is attempting to avoid that problem by emphasizing the console’s versatility in a series of trailers and advertisements.
The latest trailer keeps the ‘Switch’ mechanic in the forefront but also highlights the biggest games that will be coming to the console in its first six months of shelf life. The trailer shows lots of young 20 somethings having the time of their life playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch, Splatoon 2, Arms and Mario Kart 8 everywhere from the toilet to a lecture hall.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an exciting game, but again, this is one that can easily be played on the Wii U for gamers who didn’t skip that lackluster Nintendo console generation. Other launch titles like Bomberman and Street Fighter 2 are also closer to remakes or remasters than they are too enticing reasons to buy a new console. We’ll find out soon enough ifZelda is enough of a selling point to get consumers lining up, but if not, Splatoon 2 over the summer and Mario Odyssey during the holiday will definitely do the trick.
