Square Enix Unveils New Final Fantasy 7 Remake Visual

The Final Fantasy franchise has returned to mainstream gaming relevance just in time for the series’ most important milestone yet. Final Fantasy 15 became the fastest selling Final Fantasy game ever last year, and Square Enix will be hoping to capitalize on that success during the company’s year-long Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary celebrations, beginning today and spanning the entire year.

Naturally, fans of the series expect Square Enix to drop some major bombshell announcements about the future of Final Fantasy this year, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake expected to take center stage given its status as the next high-profile Final Fantasy release currently announced. That wasn’t the case during the opening ceremony of the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary celebration, however – rather than a big reveal or a brand new trailer, fans were instead treated to a single new visual still from the upcoming game.

To be fair, the visual is one that is sure to get Final Fantasy 7 Remake fans extremely excited, as it features a highly-detailed rendition of Cloud in Midgar with the looming spectre of Final Fantasy 7antagonist Sephiroth perched above him. If the game looks anything like the visual released, it will be absolutely gorgeous, although it is mildly concerning that after more than a year since the last meaningful look at Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Square Enix doesn’t have any new footage to show off yet.

That could all be part of the plan, however, as director Tetsuya Nomura revealed earlier this month that Square Enix fully believes it will have new gameplay footage to show for both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 before the end of 2017. While there aren’t any official plans regarding those unveilings, the fact that Nomura is comfortable enough to state that they will happen likely means they will – Square Enix has been very guarded about both titles, and hasn’t been quick to offer up news if there hasn’t been anything of significance.

Regardless of just how much gamers get to see of Final Fantasy 7 Remake during the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary celebrations, it’s clearly a game that means a lot to the team at Square Enix, considering they felt a single new image was worth a spot in the opening ceremonies. The battle between Cloud Strife and Sephiroth is one that has been going on for decades, and judging by the image released, it has never looked as good as it will once Final Fantasy 7 Remake finally releases.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently in development for the PS4.
