Those who have been following The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series since its inception were surely excited when the developer announced the release date for Season 3, as there’s now less than a week to go before fans can pick up where they left off in the story. However, gamers who are stuck in the last console generation might have due cause to upgrade to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One relatively soon, for it has now been confirmed that The Walking Dead‘s third season will be skipping a release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Telltale Games officially made the announcement on its website, but the studio didn’t explicitly cite a reason for not manufacturing a disc or digital version of The Walking Dead‘s third season for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Nevertheless, the developer did provide fans who played the earlier seasons on older consoles an explanation as to how one would go about importing saves from Season Two onto newer hardware.
With The Walking Dead‘s third season, A New Frontier, responding to player choices made during the game’s second season, fans on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 who want to upgrade their consoles and have their actions remain relevant will need to transfer their old data onto the fresh systems. Transferring saves from Season Two of The Walking Dead will require fans to have a Telltale account and to download a patch, which will then allow them to upload their files and bring them over to modern hardware. When it comes to moving the information from a PS3 or 360, the consoles will have to be plugged back in for the aforementioned update in order to access previous save files.
The Walking Dead is now the latest title which began as a game available on both last and current generation systems to drop the older consoles in order to put its attention toward developing for contemporary hardware. For instance, Destiny released its last patch for PS3 and Xbox 360 earlier this year, leaving many would-be Guardians in the lurch when it comes to receiving new content such as its Rise of Iron expansion. Not to mention, Rockstar Games eventually began focusing on creating all of the DLC for Grand Theft Auto 5 solely for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, even though the game initially came out for PS3 and Xbox 360.
At any rate, those Walking Dead fans who are willing to continue along with the game’s overarching narrative are going to be privy to an exciting premiere if the trailer for Parts 1 and 2 of A New Frontier is indicative of all the changes to come. If anything, fans are more than likely going to be surprised to find out how the game’s characters from the end of Season 2 have progressed, and how an older Clementine is coping with the world around her.
